101 Films to See

Photobucket

I love lists. Making lists, carrying around lists, revisiting lists and especially crossing things off lists when they are complete! About three years ago I made a great list: 101 Films I Can't Believe I Haven't Seen and the plan was to see them all in 1001 days, which was completed just before midnight of the last day. Overall it was a great experience, so I'm going for round 2 and this time it's literally a 'Films to See' list. I drew inspiration from a variety of sources, the nominees list for the 31 Flicks That Give You the Willies list for filling in some of the blanks for horror films, the Movies You Should See Top 1000 Movies You Like list, the Stephen Jay Schneider book "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", the IMDb Top 250 and of course I threw in a bunch of stuff I just want to see as well as the inevitable 'films people always talk about'. Once I filtered out all the films I had seen from those lists I was left with just over 1000 films. It was a challenge to narrow it down to 101, but I excluded films I already own (that is a different challenge), would be near impossible to find and anything I've already requested either from zip.ca or the library. Time to embark on another fun film adventure!

That looks like a great list! I've seen (and own) Boondock Saints and think it's a great film. I think you'll probably enjoy it as well. I've also seen (and own) Zatoichi and found it a bit odd. But, I'm not as familiar with foreign film conventions as you probably are.

Great list! Man, I want you to see some of these right away so we can discuss...

Aguirre - The film that got me into Herzog. The opening and closing shots alone are worth it.

Battle Royale - WooHoo! have fun with this one...

Blow-Up - The first time I saw this I had a frown on my face for hours afterwards...What the hell did I just see? But it stayed with me and I eventually worked out the concept of the film - that reality depends on your context. After that, I loved it.

Boondock Saints - I haven't seen this, but once you do, track down the documentary called "Overnight" - it's all about director Troy Duffy and how he let all the fame and power go to his head. I actually don't want to see this film after having seen that...

Cat People / I Walked With A Zombie - Shadows are glorious things on film...

Kaidan / Onibaba - If you want to know where the last decade's J-Horror took much of its inspiration, look no further.

Linda Linda Linda - I have to believe you will love this film...

The Sting - Classic, classic stuff.

Sunrise - My favourite silent film.

OK, I'll stop...There's a bunch I should try to get to as well - "A Star Is Born", "If...", "Harold And Maude". Hmmm, I sense my own list coming out of this...

Oooh, you're in for some fun!
The Apartment, Barton Fink, The Conversation, The Sting... All big faves of mine.

Gotta go finish watching A Lion in Winter, which is on *my* list...

I'm really looking forward to exploring this list, thanks for the feedback - sounds like they are good choices.

Jenn, have you seen anything else by Takeshi Kitano? It's all a world of wierd.

Bob you should totally do your own list! I had to cull back to just 2 Herzog films, I didn't want to overplay any one director. He's crazy though! Battle Royale kept on going on and off my list .. I'm not sure if it will be too much but I want to see.

A Lion in Winter eh Polly? I musta missed that one! I hope you like it!

There are some awesome titles on your list - as Polly mentioned, you're in for a great time.

I think I should probably do the same list but I'm not sure I could narrow it down to 101. If I do take on the challenge, I'll let you know!
