TurkeyThon on Space

Photobucket

I love the sense of humour over at Space for themed marathons that are often featured on holidays. To celebrate Thanksgiving this Monday they are having a Viewer Choice Thanksgiving TurkeyThon for the best-worst movies. Voting has closed and selected the top 5 turkeys are chosen:

5. The Adventures of Pluto Nash
4. Conan the Destroyer
3. Van Helsing
2. Alien vs. Predator
1. Battlefield Earth

I'm unsure if I'm happy or sad that I've seen 4 out of the 5 films (all but Pluto Nash), and they certainly are an interesting selection of best-worst movies. I have a special place in my heart for Conan the Destroyer, mostly due to the powerhouse Grace Jones (and for memories of trying to hold my breath as long as Conan could), and vaguely remember Alien vs. Predator and it feels like it fits this best-worst bill as well. The number one spot going to Battlefield Earth feels perfect.

Other TurkeyThon contestants were: Batman and Robin, Batman Forever, Daredevil, Elektra, Hulk, King Kong (2005), Paycheque, Solaris and The Village. Have any secret favourites in there? What would you have picked as the best-worst movie?

Space's Viewer Choice Thanksgiving TurkeyThon will air Monday October 12, 2009 starting at 11am EST.

Ironically Conan the Destroyer is the only film on that list I haven't seen. I really enjoyed King Kong ('05), I honestly don't get all the massive hate it's received since its release. It seems to have brought out the worst in remake haters, as if it was some sort of crime against film.

I think Batman and Robin would run away with my #1 best worst film. Though I can't argue against Battlefield Earth.

Solaris? Solaris?! Both Tarkovsky's and Soderbergh's versions are great films (I assume they mean Soderbergh's) - slow, thoughtful and quite beautiful. I guess they aren't typical sci-fi, but I wish there were more sci-fi films like them. Did they include it just because they expected it to be a shoot 'em up space adventure?

SPACE should really be ashamed of themselves for lumping this into a best-worst category - they should be promoting interesting and different sci-fi. Otherwise, they'll just keep getting more new candidates for this category in the future.

Yes, I'm grumpy...B-)

I'm so with you guys - King Kong (2005) and Solaris kinda stick out like sore thumbs here. Sure, there were mixed reactions to the films but I'm wouldn't call them bad.

I wasn't a huge fan of King Kong - I love the first 30 minutes and it has some beautiful moments but it made me tired from all the pursuit stuff.

They must mean the Soderbergh's Solaris, I can't even imagine seeing Tarkovsky's on TV... even thought that would be cool. I enjoyed both of them, even thought I saw them in reverse order and years apart. Hmm. That's oddly fitting for that film(s).

Some of my fave best-worst stuff is way older than these titles. I'm thinking circa Logan's Run :) Renew! Renew!

OK, I liked Daredevil and Elektra but then I am a superhero geek. So with them on King Kong though, hated that! I haven't some of these so I think I will PVR them and get a good laugh out of Battlefield Earth in particular, heard so much about this film that I just gotta see it myself.

I liked Elektra more than Daredevil, by a lot. I was a little surprized they were included - I wonder what that meeting was like coming up with the titles!

I think I'll pop in to check out Alien vs Predator and maybe Van Hesling. I watched King Kong yesterday, I didn't realized you didn't like it Suzie!

Nothing like turkeys on a turkey day.
