Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 16, 2010

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 16, 2010! It's a dark week out there will loads of dark films be they acclaimed, highly anticipated or both. I know lots of them are ones I want to get out and see! Let's have a look.

In limited release this week we have just two films this week, how unusual! I'm totally psyched for The Square, an Australian crime/thriller written by and starring Joel Edgerton and directed by his brother Nash Edgerton. Aussie thrilled have been kicking butt recently (Cactus, The Loved Ones) so I know I'll be checking this out. The Square also stars Claire van der Boom, David Roberts and Anthony Hayes. If you are looking for the (non musical) feel good release of week, look no further than Captain Abu Raed as it has positivity stamped all over it. It stars Nadim Sawalha as a man accidentally mistaken for a Captain serves as inspiration for kids.

In wide release this week we have four releases, all with dark undertones. First up is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo / Män som hatar kvinnor, a film adaptation of the first in a book trilogy (followed by The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest) all by the late Stieg Larsson. All three films in the trilogy have been made, and English film re-make for the first in the trilogy is set for 2012. But, we all know to jump on the original train before re-makes, right? This is another one of the harsher releases this week, if you had any doubts consider the alternate title is Millennium: Part 1 - Men Who Hate Women. Yikes. Certainly give an idea of the tone, but I'm still going to brave it for the love of Swedish film. Next up is one of what I think is fair to say one of the highest anticipated films of the year so far: Kick-Ass. It's based on the comic book series where regular people, including kids, decide to be super heroes. Don't let that make you think it's family friendly though, it looks dark, quirky and comes with an 18A rating. Also out in wide release is The Doors documentary When You're Strange narrated by Johnny Depp and and the straight-up re-make of the 2007 film Death at a Funeral, called... you guessed it Death at a Funeral (2010).

A mid-week release next week if another musical number with concert film Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D hitting screens as of Wednesday April 21, 2010 for 2 weeks, and also marks our fourth 3D release of 2010.

If that isn't enough, three of last weeks releases are still out in theatres and all all fantastic films - see 'em while you can: The Misfortunates / De helaasheid der dingen, The Wild Hunt and The Eclipse.

Have a great weekend!

Shannon
