This week isn't overly voluminous for releases but June 22, 2010 DVD releases do hold 2 of my favourites of the year (so far).
The first of those two is The Last Station, which was in line for many awards for the 2009 year, but was released here in Toronto in 2010. Either way, it's a absolutely sensational film starring Helen Mirren, James McAvoy and Christopher Plummer and is a biopic on Tolstoy, and at it's heart is really about love. It's not to be missed. Also very enjoyable 2010 release is the Greek Mythology redux Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, based on the book of the same name. It's a lot of fun for a kids adventure film and I whole heartedly enjoyed it especially for it's redefinition of strengths and weaknesses. Also hitting the shelves this week is Remember Me, a torn love story starring Robert Pattinson (Twilight) and Emilie De Ravin ("LOST"), that is as much about loss as it is about love.
Several films coming out this week are ones that have been on my to see radar, namely the multiple award winning The Maid and documentaries Collapse and Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country.
If you are feeling a bit old school, than this weeks releases have a huge treat for you. None other than the original 1975 version of Death Race 2000 with Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine. Now that's a film I've not seen for at least 20 years.
TV release of the week pick would have to be Hung Season 1, starring Thomas Jane as a high school teacher/prostitute and Jane Adams as he's pimp.
Last up for the week is She’s Out of My League, starring Jay Baruchal (The Trotsky) and Alice Eve. The premise is that she's a 10 and he's a 5 so how is this possible comedy, and I'm not a big fan of that whole numbers game but as I said last week on The Unnamed Movie Podcast that I thought he was way better than a 5, although the guys didn't quite seem to agree with me. Who ya gonna believe on that one, eh?
