DVD Releases for December 6, 2011

Time to take a look at a selection of DVD releases for Tuesday December 6, 2011

  • The Help (DVD Review) based on the novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and starring Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain & Bryce Dallas Howard set in Mississippi in the 1960s. Part of the 2011 Book Book to Film Club.
  • The Debt (DVD Review) Very impressive espionage drama starring Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, Marton Csokas, Tom Wilkinson & Ciarán Hinds. This one really kept me intrigued the entire time, and has great human drama.
  • UFC: Ultimate Fight Collection 2011 this mammoth collection includes 170 Fights on 20 Discs, 50 Hours including 10 hours that never before been seen. Wow. That's just amazing. I'm sure it will be an awesome present for fight fans.
  • Magic Beyond Words: The JK Rowling Story Being a huge Harry Potter fan I'm quite curious about this biography on JK Rowlings.
  • Cowboys and Aliens SciFi/Western that hit theatres in the summer is now out on DVD, stars Daniel Craig & Harrison Ford, directed by Jon Favreau. I missed it as it was out during the move, but I still really want to see it.
  • Surrogate Valentine beautiful relaxed/real-ish/meta film starring Goh Nakamura as Goh Nakamura, as he travels with an actor 'learning' from him on road trips across the West Coast of the States. Understated comedy and sweet romance to boot. I strongly recommend.
  • Project Nim documentary following the story of a chimpanzee raised by a human family in the 70's, from Man on Wire director James Marsh. (US release date: Feb 7, 2012)
  • Big Love: The Complete Fifth Season Wow, I've still only seen season 1 of this polygamy family series, but it all comes to a close now, is if you need to catch up on all of it you can as Big Love: The Complete Collection is also available.
  • Stieg Larsson's Dragon Tattoo Trilogy Extended Edition before the US redux later this month in theatres, you can re-visit the original Swedish trilogy starring Noomi Rapace & Michael Nyqvist including all three film: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo / The Girl Who Played with Fire / The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. (release date: Dec 9, 2011)
  • Popular titles also out on DVD today include the Sarah Jessica Parker do-it-all comedy I Don't Know How She Does It, Jim Carrey in Mr Popper's Penguins (which might be a nice holiday choice) and the wolfpack back for seconds in The Hangover Part 2.

The only thing - and I mean the ONLY thing - in that list of major releases that I care about is "Project Nim" (which I'm really looking forward to). Not a great week - usually there are more things I want to catch up with...
